A Maryland man is in the Palm Beach County Jail after he allegedly tried to disarm a West Palm Beach police officer of his department-issued firearm, according to an arrest report.
Brandon Blake is facing a charge of aggravated battery on a police officer and is expected to make his first appearance in court Tuesday morning.
The officer was working at St. Mary’s Medical Center when he received word of a violent patient, the report said. Blake appeared to be upset and nervous and was having an issue with his mother when the officer arrived.
The report said that Blake, 26, became angry then lunged with two hands toward the officer’s gun. A “violent struggle ensued” with Blake and the officer falling to the ground. One of the two retention devices on the holster of the officer’s handgun was released by Blake, who wrapped his legs around the officer’s waist while he fought for the weapon, the report said.
Blake’s mother and a security supervisor assisted the officer in subduing Blake.
The officer sustained a right knee injury and a small laceration to the left side of his neck.
